St. Ives Feast Day

Date TBC but normally falls on the first Monday after 3rd February
The St Ives Feast is an ancient tradition that celebrates the consecration of the Parish Church of St Eia in 1434 and offers a rare chance to watch the game of Hurling the Silver Ball, a centuries’ old form of rugby. At around 10.30am, the Mayor of St Ives will hurl the ball into the crowd on the beach whilst shouting guare wheg ya guare teg (fair play is good play in Cornish). This game is particularly suited to older children or teenagers.
If you have younger children that would like to get in on the feast day actions, the Councillors drop pennies to the children in the crowd from the balcony at the Guildhall. At noon, the child/teenager who managed to keep hold of the silver ball from the earlier game is revealed and receives a reward from the Mayor. There is also processions of musicians and school children through the cobbled streets during the event.
